प्राचीन काल में देवताओं और दानवों (असुरों) के बीच निरंतर युद्ध होते रहते थे। एक बार असुरों ने देवताओं पर इतना भयंकर आक्रमण किया कि देवता युद्ध हारने लगे। देवराज इंद्र भी बहुत व्यथित और चिंतित हो गए।
देवराज इंद्र अपनी पत्नी इंद्राणी (शचि) के साथ गुरु बृहस्पति के पास गए और बोले - "हे गुरु देव, क्या कोई ऐसा उपाय है जिससे मैं यह युद्ध जीत सकूँ?"
गुरु बृहस्पति ने कहा -
श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा के दिन रक्षा विधान करना चाहिए। यदि आपकी पत्नी श्रद्धापूर्वक रक्षा सूत्र बनाकर आपके दाहिने हाथ पर बाँध दे, तो विजय निश्चित है।"
इंद्राणी ने रक्षा सूत्र बाँधा:
इंद्राणी ने भक्तिपूर्वक मंत्रोच्चार करते हुए एक पवित्र सूत का धागा लिया, उसे हल्दी और चंदन से पवित्र किया और इंद्र के दाहिने हाथ पर बाँध दिया।
उस दिन श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा थी।
इंद्राणी ने कहा - "यह रक्षा सूत्र आपकी रक्षा करेगा। आप निडर होकर युद्ध करें।"
रक्षा सूत्र की शक्ति और गुरु के आशीर्वाद से इंद्र ने राक्षसों पर विजय प्राप्त की।
इस दिन को "रक्षा सूत्र" बाँधने की परंपरा की शुरुआत माना जाता है।
यह परंपरा रक्षा बंधन की मूल भावना को दर्शाती है - रक्षा की भावना, न कि केवल भाई-बहन के रिश्ते की।
स्त्री द्वारा पुरुष की रक्षा के लिए बाँधा गया यह धागा आस्था, विश्वास और प्रेम की शक्ति का प्रतीक है।
"विश्वास से बाँधा गया रक्षा सूत्र किसी भी हथियार से अधिक शक्तिशाली होता है।"
In ancient times, there were constant wars between the Gods and Demons (Asuras). Once the Asuras attacked the Gods so fiercely that the Gods started losing the war. Devraj Indra also became very upset and worried.
Devraj Indra went to Guru Brihaspati with his wife Indrani (Shachi) and said - "O Guru Dev, is there any way by which I can win this war?"
Guru Brihaspati said -
Raksha Vidhan should be done on the full moon day of Shravan month. If your wife prepares a Raksha Sutra with devotion and ties it on your right hand, then victory is certain."
Indrani tied the Raksha Sutra:
Indrani took a sacred cotton thread while chanting mantras with devotion, sanctified it with turmeric and sandalwood and tied it on Indra's right hand.
That day was the full moon day of Shravan month.
Indrani said – “This Raksha Sutra will protect you. You fight fearlessly.”
With the power of Raksha Sutra and the blessings of the Guru, Indra conquered the demons.
This day is considered to be the beginning of the tradition of tying “Raksha Sutra”.
This tradition reflects the basic spirit of Raksha Bandhan – the spirit of protection, not just the relationship between brother and sister.
